This lovely 56-year-old lady was bothered by her lower lid discolouration, xanthelasma (cholesterol deposit) and prominent lower lid veins that gave a blue-green hue to her lids. She is seen 1 month out from xanthelasma excision, ligation of the large dilated veins, and CO2 laser resurfacing.
Some veins in the eyelids are responsive to Nd-Yag laser treatments and can be managed, although not permanently erased with laser. For those patients who have large dilated veins and who want a permanent solution, Dr. Brace can surgically remove the veins to give the eyelids a smoother appearance and more equal tone.
Xanthelamsa can be treated many different ways. Dr. Brace’s preference is to surgically excise the plaques of cholesteral to permanently excise them. The eyelid heals extremely well after this surgery and the scars are barely visible once fully matured, which takes 6 months to a year.
